SpecKare®LBA – Lactobionic Acid: For gentle exfoliation
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) are key ingredients in the never-ending search for healthy-looking skin. Sometimes, they can be a little too harsh to use, especially if you have skin that is prone to irritation. If you’re looking to get the same benefits as AHAs but also wanting something gentler on your skin, the answer is the Polyhydroxy Acid (PHA) – Lactobionic Acid –SpecKare®LBA
Lactobionic Acid is the oxidized form of lactose, which is derived from cow’s milk.
One of two molecules comprising Lactobionic Acid is gluconic acid. Gluconic acid has been shown to provide significant anti-aging effects when incorporated into formulations as Gluconolactone. Galactose, the second molecular constituent of Lactobionic Acid is a chemically neutral sugar found in the body that is utilized by skin during glycosaminoglycan and collagen syntheses, and cell migration
Lactobionic Acid is a larger molecule than glycolic acid, and it will not penetrate the skin as well, and thus is considered less strong and less irritating. Polyhydroxy acids tend not to be irritating and function as excellent humectants and help hydrate the skin and keep it plump.
Humectants attract and absorb moisture either from the air or the skin, keeping the skin’s surface hydrated.
Since Lactobionic Acid does not penetrate the skin so well, it only provides surface exfoliation
It also acts as an antioxidant, soaking up skin-damaging free radicals as well as being a humectant moisturizer to attract water to the skin.
It does not need to be used at a low pH, which also reduces irritation.
Apart from its function as an exfoliator, Lactobionic Acid helps protect against sun damage.
One 2016 study found that Lactobionic Acid works “…as an antioxidant chelating agent, absorbing free radicals generated by ultraviolet exposure,” thereby helping to protect against further sun damage.
Lactobionic Acid brightens skin: Because of the increased cellular turnover rate to prevent build up, it may result in a brighter skin tone for all skin types.
Lactobionic Acid reduces lines: It also evens out skin tone, including the reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Lactobionic Acid fades dark marks and also aids in the lessening of scars and hyperpigmentation.
Lactobionic Acid helps hydrate: Increased elastin and collagen lead to better hydration.
Lactobionic Acid thickens skin: Research published in 2012 indicated that polyhydroxy acids, can increase epidermal thickness.
Lactobionic Acid has application in treatment products such as scrubs, serums, peels, and masks.
