ROKA Cirkle® Sotabosk is a groundbreaking, liquid lignin-based active designed with both performance and sustainability in mind. Derived from softwood kraft lignin – a by-product of the paper industry that’s usually burnt as waste – Sotabosk transforms this overlooked material into a high-performance multifunctional ingredient for cosmetics.
It’s a thick, brown liquid with a natural woody scent, and it blends easily into the oil phase of formulations. With a 100% natural origin index and INCI listing of Lignin Oleate (and) Oleic Acid, Sotabosk brings powerful benefits: it’s antimicrobial, antioxidant, a natural emulsion stabiliser, and a film-former. It helps protect and balance the skin and scalp microbiome, actively reduces sebum and redness, and supports the skin barrier – all while being kind to the environment.
Clinical trials show a visible reduction in blackheads and nodules in acne-prone skin, with barrier improvement and decreased oxidative stress similar to the effects of vitamin C. Sotabosk also boosts the effectiveness of commercial preservatives, allowing formulators to reduce petrochemical use without compromising safety (ISO 11930 compliant). Ideal for skincare, sun care and scalp treatments, it’s a future-proof ingredient that pairs sustainability with real, proven performance.
