Punica Granatum, also known as Pomegranate, has long been touted for its high levels of Vitamin C and antioxidants, which can help prevent cell damage. Several studies have shown its ability to speed wound healing, as well as play a positive role in the repair of sun damaged and aging skin. Pomegranate extracts exert their positive effects by extending the life of fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin, the components that give strength and support to the skin, according to an article on Anti-Aging foods at Longevity.About.com.
According to Dr. Leong from the Medical College of Virginia, another recent study showed that the oil from Punica Granatum extract can stimulate the production of collagen, resulting in a mild thickening of the epidermis and dermis of the skin. It can also prevent the breakdown of collagen fibers, the culprits of skin aging and wrinkles. “This suggests that pomegranate oil may boost the ability of skin to repair itself by regenerating the supporting collagen structure of the skin. Other studies have shown that pomegranate seed extract applied to the skin may reduce the formation of some forms of skin cancer, suggesting that its antioxidant capabilities may be responsible for some of pomegranate’s skin benefits.”
Punica Granatum has also been shown to provide UVA- and UVB-induced damage control, skin regeneration, hyperpigmentation control, chemopreventative activity, matrix metalloproteinase inhibition, enhance the topical effectiveness of sunscreens, and destroy several viruses on contact.
